How to Access Microsoft Copilot with Your BYU‑Idaho Account
Audience: BYU‑Idaho students and employees accessing Microsoft Copilot with university‑managed credentials
Prerequisites: You must have an active BYU‑Idaho Microsoft account (username@byui.edu). No special license request is required to use Microsoft Copilot because it is included with BYUI’s Microsoft 365 tenant and protected under university data policies.
Step 1: Go to Microsoft Copilot
Open your browser and navigate to:
https://copilot.microsoft.com
Or, from Microsoft 365 apps, click the Copilot icon.
Look for the Sign in button in the bottom-left corner of the page and click it.
Note: If you are already signed into a Microsoft account in your browser, you may be taken directly to an experience-selection screen and skip Steps 2 and 3 entirely. See the Returning Users section below.
Step 2: Choose to Sign In with Microsoft
A popup will appear with the title "Create an account or sign in."
Click Continue with Microsoft.
Step 3: Enter Your BYU‑Idaho Username
On the Microsoft sign-in screen, enter your BYU‑Idaho username:
username@byui.edu
Then click Next.
Step 4: Complete Authentication
After clicking next you may be redirected to the Church login page. Depending on your session state, you may:
- Be signed in automatically if you already have an active BYU-Idaho SSO session in your browser
- Be prompted to enter your Church credentials and complete multi-factor authentication (MFA)
Follow the prompts to enter your Church credentials and complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) if prompted.
Step 5: Select the Work Experience
After authentication, you may be asked:
"Which Copilot experience are you looking for?"
Select Work, described as "A secure and compliant Copilot integrated with your enterprise account."
Your @byui.edu email address will be shown under the Work option to confirm the correct account is being used. Click Go to copilot.cloud.microsoft.
Step 6: Verify You Are in the Work Environment
You will know you are in the protected Work environment when:
- The URL changes to
m365.cloud.microsoft/chat - The page displays "Hi, how can I help?" with a Work-oriented interface
- The left sidebar shows enterprise features including Search, Library, Create, Teach, and Agents
- Your
@byui.eduemail appears under your profile name in the bottom-left corner
Returning Users: Faster Login
If you have previously signed in, you may see a "Pick an account" screen after clicking Continue with Microsoft. Simply select your @byui.edu account from the list.
If your account already has an active session, you may be taken directly to the experience-selection screen in Step 5, bypassing the credential and MFA prompts entirely.
Troubleshooting
I accidentally logged in with a personal Microsoft account.
Click your profile picture → Sign out, then log in again using username@byui.edu.
Copilot is telling me my organization doesn’t allow this service. Your BYUI Microsoft account may have an issue. Contact the BYU‑Idaho Help Desk.
I don’t see the data protection notice. You may still be in consumer mode. Sign out and sign back in with your BYUI account.
